The government can lower medical costs by becoming involved in pharmaceutical production. The U.S. government could start their own company to manufacture pharmaceuticals - through the National Institute of Health and begin selling affordable medication. Let the free market economy decide if they want to support the government's or the pharmaceutical's industry.
Currently, the U.S. government subsidizes the pharmaceutical industries with billions of dollars each year. If there is legislation that allows these companies to release their patent to the U.S. government early, then the pharmaceutical company can prosper as well- through tax breaks, grants for research and development, and other incentives. This frees the pharmaceutical industry to continue doing what they do best, develop life-saving drugs for our society.
